CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Kent State defeated rival Akron, 70-65, in the Mid-American Conference men's basketball championship game Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena before 10,376 fans. CBS Sports bowl expert Jerry Palm picks the teams he feels will comprise the national semifinals at the end of the season along with bowl projections for every single game.

CONFERENCE USA: Western Kentucky again looks like the class of the league MORE: Record projections for all 130 FBS teams There’s a chance for national exposure: On Sept. 23, one week after matching up against high-powered Tulsa, the Rockets will face Miami (Fla.) on the road. Better yet, Toledo will draw both Northern Illinois and Western Michigan at home. All that’s in the way is a complete season. When the Rockets beat the Huskies, as they did a year ago, the Broncos put together a regular season to remember; when the Rockets beat everyone else, NIU has the last laugh. Will 2017 be any different? It’s easy to say that the stars have aligned for Toledo, if slightly more difficult to predict an easy romp through conference play.

Jason Candle, Toledo Candle is a rising star in the MAC and leads a Toledo team that could be the favorite to win the conference in 2017. The Ohio native was promoted to head coach after the 2015 regular season when Matt Campbell left to take over at Iowa State. The Rockets won Candle’s first game (2015 Boca Raton Bowl) and finished 9-4 last year, with three losses coming by five points or less. From 2012-15, Candle called the plays for Toledo’s high-powered offense, which led the conference in scoring in 2014. He was hired by Tim Beckman at Toledo in 2009 and remained in an assistant capacity when Campbell was promoted to head coach prior to the 2012 season. He also has a previous stop on his resume from a stint at Mount Union (2003-08).

The Eagles will have to break in a couple of new starters in the trenches, and tight end Nigel Kilby won’t return to the team after catching 34 passes in 2016. While the personnel is certainly there to go bowling once again, Eastern Michigan’s schedule isn’t friendly. The Eagles play three out of the top four teams from the East Division, while catching Central Michigan and Northern Illinois on the road. At Central Michigan, coach John Bonamego has a tough assignment trying to replace quarterback Cooper Rush this offseason.

Can quarterback Quinton Maxwell take the next step in his development? Miami gets the nod as Athlon’s pick for the East champion, but this will be a close battle in the standings all year. Western Michigan for No. 1 in the West Division Similar to the East Division, there was a lengthy debate in Athlon’s prediction meeting for the No. 1 spot in the West.

Further Reading “In the years leading up to the transition to Intel CPUs in Macs, the porting process entailed converting games to run on PowerPC hardware,” said Smith. “This was difficult because the existing code was written with x86 architecture in mind, and since this didn’t always have a 1:1 relationship with how PowerPC architecture worked, we had some interesting problems to solve.” Climbing out into the sun Players using today’s Mac offerings live within a different landscape. Things became much rosier over the past decade for a number of reasons. First, there was the switch to Intel. By adopting the same architecture used in most Windows PCs, Apple moved the Mac out of a software engineering wasteland.

The battle between the two started early in the game and carried on for much of the night. Hall either scored or assisted on five of Kent State’s first six baskets as the Golden Flashes jumped out to an early lead. However, Kent State’s frontcourt ran into foul trouble in the first half. Both Hall and picked up two fouls in the half while Adonis De La Rosa racked up three in just eight minutes on the court. That gave Johnson an advantage for Akron down low as he scored 10 points in the first half to keep the Zips close. The game remained close for much of the second half until a 10-0 run put Kent State in front by eight with 4:24 to play.

But Walker answered by leading Kent on a 10-0 run hitting a runner in the lane, a rebound stick-back and a pair of free throws with 4:24 to play for a 57-49 cushion the Flashes used for a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Did you know: The all-time basketball series between Akron and Kent State has been virtually even (74-73, Kent, before the final), and that was the case this season as each team won on the others home court. But in MAC Tournament play the Zips entered Saturday's title game holding a 5-2 edge in MAC Tournament meetings and a 1-1 mark against the Golden Flashes in the title game. Kent won, 74-55, over Akron in 2008 for a MAC Tournament crown. Akron won in overtime, 66-65, in 2011.

It was a huge shift.” And all this has made the Mac a more vibrant gaming platform than ever before. Mac games have a substantially larger addressable market, the economics of scale are more favorable, and for a while, the hardware was in a sweet spot. With plenty of great games available on the Mac, gamer snark has been looking less and less applicable in recent years.

($20 on and ) is one of this year’s indie sensations, although it might seem like a bummer at first blush. It’s about a young cat-person, Mae, who returns home to her parents’ place after dropping out of college. The town has changed, friends have changed, and Mae has certainly changed too, and now she has to navigate all of that while readjusting to her old life. Oh, and something weird is definitely happening in the woods. OK, so it’s not the most upbeat game of the year, but Night in the Woods shines thanks to its rich, relatable dialogue and lovably wounded characters—and that wonderfully evocative art style, too.

Look for Guyton to join Scott Miller in giving the Falcons two tough-to-handle receivers. Buffalo OL Jacquis Webb. The Rutgers transfer is big enough to maul defenders in the running game, but he’ll need to show he has the footwork needed to handle one of the Bulls’ tackle spots.

Additionally, the Golden Flashes have managed only eight wins in MAC games during that span. Prior to taking over as Kent State’s head coach, Haynes worked at a handful of programs as a defensive assistant, including Arkansas, Ohio State, Michigan State and Louisville. Defense has been a strength for the Golden Flashes over the last two years, finishing second in the MAC in fewest yards per play allowed. However, Kent State’s offense hasn’t finished higher than 11 th in the league in scoring.

Walk On’s Independence Bowl: Southern Miss (8-4) vs. Florida State (6-6) – Wednesday, Dec. 27 (Shreveport, La.) Florida State beat Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday to earn a Christmas in Shreveport. Was it worth it, Seminoles? Southern Miss lost out on a Conference USA West division title thanks to a three-way tiebreaker. Maybe the Seminoles will be inspired under interim coach Odell Haggins, who got a Powerade bath after the ULM win. Yahoo Sports When the Boston Celtics traded for Kyrie Irving in August 2017, we all wondered what a team molded in the All-Star point guard’s image might look like after emerging from the shadow of LeBron James, and yet this mediocre outfit bears no resemblance to the one we would have pictured.

Even if a program doesn’t have the resources of the nation’s elite jobs, a good coach can elevate a program into national title contention. However, similar to any position on the field, statistics may not tell the full story when judging a coaching tenure. This is not simply a list of coaches ranked by accomplishment or wins. While those aspects are important, it doesn’t provide a complete picture of how successful coaches are. Winning 10 games at Alabama is different than winning 10 games at Kentucky. Also, every program has a different amount of resources available. Hierarchy in college football also plays a vital role in how successful programs are.

The son of coaching legend Bobby Bowden started his career as a graduate assistant with the Seminoles in 1982 and landed his first head coaching gig at Salem in 1983. He guided the Tigers to a 19-13 record from 1983-85 and spent one year at Akron as the program’s quarterbacks coach in 1986 before taking over at Samford in 1987. Bowden went 45-23-1 with the Bulldogs and was hired at Auburn prior to the 1993 campaign.

Ran all over the Zips with 124 yards and three touchdowns while finished with two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground. The only positive takeaways for Akron: the team never turned the ball over and the team wasn't shut out (not all MAC teams can say the same, unfortunately). The most exciting part of the game?

This is the best Playoff rotation, partly because the Rose and Sugar are the best games, but also because the committee has a little more freedom with the other big games. • The Orange’s ACC bid is likely to go to Clemson, Louisville, Miami, or Virginia Tech.

Gus Ragland, Miami (Ohio). Ragland avoids interceptions, tossing just one in 179 attempts last fall, and has a way with winning, going 6-1 as the starter, so he’s easily one of the MAC’s best. Ryan Graham, Northern Illinois. Graham must stay healthy should NIU hope to regain its stride in the West Division. Riley Neal, Ball State.

But Kent's defense, even with its inside players in foul trouble, kept Akron from going off, particularly on the perimeter as the Zips were just 1-for-6 on 3-pointers. The other plus for Akron, as Kent was playing its fourth game in six days, was the Zips had eight points off the bench at halftime to just four for KSU. The game changer: Akron took a 49-47 lead on a Josh Williams 3-pointer.

Tyler McVicar went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Mammoths (4-5). DonAndre Clark had four hits for the Beavers (3-6). Hockey: Tami Tranter of Washington Township was named the senior director of development for the USA Hockey Foundation. Tranter will lead all fund-raising projects for the foundation. Tranter served as the senior director of philanthropy at USA Volleyball. Before that, she was the director of development for the Colorado School of Mines Foundation.

Kent got the lead early, gave it up once in the first half and once in the second, but held on despite a flurry of late Akron 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Jaylin Walker, who lifted Kent to the championship game with the winning basket against Ohio University, delivered a game-high 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting along with six rebounds. Walker was the tournament MVP.

As usual, the MAC will be one of the more competitive conferences in the country with over half of the league’s 12 teams having a viable chance at claiming the 2017 college football conference title according to the Vegas oddsmakers. Mountain West. Rashaad Penny could be in for a big year. Kent Horner/Getty Images • Favorite: San Diego State (-120) • Top contenders: • Boise State (+300) • Colorado State (+375) We found the Vegas oddsmakers’ take on the Mountain West quite noteworthy. In their eyes, it’s only a three-team race (San Diego State, Boise State, and Colorado State) for the conference title. What’s interesting to us is who’s absent from their list of top contenders: the Wyoming Cowboys.

Are the program’s facilities on par with the rest of the conference? Much like assistants, a program needs good facilities to win big. If a team is winning at a high level with poor facilities and a small budget, it reflects positively on the head coach. Is the coach successful at only one stop? Or has that coach built a solid resume from different jobs? Again, wins are important.

Carey was promoted to head coach after Dave Doeren left for NC State, with this first game coming in the Orange Bowl against Florida State. Northern Illinois went 23-5 over Carey’s first two years and lost only one game in MAC play. However, the Huskies have been hit hard by injuries at the quarterback position over the last two years and slipped to 13-13 in that span. And for the first time since 2007, Northern Illinois did not make a bowl appearance last season. Can Carey get the Huskies back on track in 2017?

The Zips deservedly entered the game as 23-point underdogs after a no-show in the first half of the MAC Championship Game. Akron, despite representing the East in the conference's title game, fell to.500 after Lane Kiffin and his Owls put on a full offensive clinic against Terry Bowden's Zips. Akron didn't even cross the pylon in the Tuesday night primetime game — which seemed to be a 3.5-hour Lane Kiffin appreciation special.
